There are several qualities that diamond appraisers look for when analyzing a gem.
Two of these are fire and brilliance. These are diamond cuts that emphasize the
reflection and refraction of light; it is the diamond’s “sparkle.”
Another quality however is clarity, the ability to peer into the gemstone’s depths.
It is this quality that is emphasized in emerald cut diamonds.
Emerald Diamonds Feature Minimalist Streamlining
Although they are both classified as precious gemstones – and despite the fact that
there are indeed such a thing as green-colored diamonds – emeralds and diamonds
have very little in common. For all their verdant beauty, emerald (a form of beryl)
displays little of diamond (a form of carbon) brilliance and sparkle. The term “emerald
diamonds” refers to the type of cut, which tends to be more rectangular and features
the gem’s clarity and color. Although emerald cut diamonds lack the fiery sparkle
of round brilliant cuts, they have a special kind of elegance and simplicity that
appeals to many gem and jewelry collectors. It is no coincidence that emerald cut
diamonds reached their greatest levels of popularity during the Art Deco Era of
the 1920s and 30s, when smooth, minimalist streamlining was in vogue.
What to Look For in Emerald Cut Diamonds for Sale
When looking at emerald cut diamonds for sale, it is important to look it over carefully.
Diamonds often have internal flaws – “cottony-looking” splotches within. A brilliant
round of princess cut may camouflage such flaws, but because emerald cut diamonds
have wide, flat, open faces – technically known as “tables” – any internal flaws
will become readily apparent.
One thing you will notice about emerald diamonds for sale is that they can be had
for substantially less than similar round brilliant cut diamonds. This is a simple
function of supply and demand; emerald cut diamonds are at present not as popular
as round and brilliant cut stones. Interestingly however, you get more actual diamond
by weight with emerald diamonds, as less of the stone is cut away. They may not
be as “traditional” as round diamond rings, but you’ll definitely get more gemstone
for your money.
Because of their rectangular shape, emerald cut diamonds make for unique jewelry
pieces. It’s use in antique and “retro”-looking jewelry can easily make pieces mounted
with emerald cut diamonds the centerpiece of any fine jewelry collection.
